Can I Say Something? The Value of Psychological Safety in Creating High-Performance Teams

Kayla Long, DO, MS, MAPP, FACEP, FAEMS
Centra Health

Do high performing teams make less errors? Are they more creative and innovative? A crucial element to high performing teams is the idea of psychological safety. Have you ever been a part of a team where members are afraid to speak up?

In this talk, we will explore the literature about psychological safety as it relates to providing high quality care, reducing clinician burnout, retaining employees, and encouraging conversation and the flow of ideas throughout the team. Through practical examples, both inside and outside the world of medicine, we will examine what it takes to create a psychologically safe environment and how this practice impacts the effectiveness of our teamwork, the quality of our patient care, and the strength of our providers, both clinically and mentally.

We will also discuss the role of failure and finding the hidden potential in others in creating highly effective teams. How will you use this information to change your organization?

From Cram to Calm: How Quarterly Competencies Improved Crew Performance

Lindsey Castle, MSN, RN, CMTE, CHSE
MedFlight of Ohio

In an effort to improve the effectiveness of competency evaluations, MedFlight of Ohio transitioned from annual to quarterly core competency assessments. They also shifted to calling the evaluations "Ongoing Readiness Assessments." This shift has yielded several key benefits, including the ability to identify crew deficiencies and knowledge gaps sooner. By increasing assessment frequency, they have enhanced early intervention strategies, ensuring that protocol adherence and process understanding are addressed proactively.

Additionally, crews reported that the quarterly format was less stressful compared to annual testing. Many expressed that they approached the scenarios with a more natural, patient-centered mindset, rather than treating the evaluations as high-stakes exams. This shift in perspective led to a more authentic demonstration of clinical skills and decision-making.

Overall, the transition to quarterly competencies has strengthened crew readiness, improved patient care, and fostered a more confident and capable EMS team. The findings suggest that more frequent assessments lead to better long-term retention and application of critical skills in real-world scenarios.
